The Histroy Of Artistic Swimming

Artistic swimming, formerly synchronized swimming, evolved from late 19th-century “water ballet” and aquatic acrobatics, first demonstrated at the Olympics in 1952. Artistic swimming has been featuring in the FINA World Championships from the very first one in Belgrade in 1973 and has been a recognised Olympic sport since the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
Pioneered by Katherine Curtis in the 1920s and popularized by Esther Williams in the 1940s, it blends swimming, dance, and gymnastics, becoming a highly athletic sport now featuring men in international competition.

Artistic swimming routines are a combination of athletic movements known as hybrids or figures performed in water to music. You will often see swimmers being lifted or thrown out of the water by members of their team!

Artistic Swimming is growing rapidly as a sport across the world. It was one of the first events to sell out at the Olympic Games held in London in 2012.

Artistic swimmers will develop many skills including, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and breath control.
